slug - sad clown bad dub II

Slug: Sad Clown Bad Dub II

This album was made after Atmosphere's Overcast, but before  the Lucy Ford record. Sad Clown comes in on track seven with  fresh sound that stretches from start to finish. Slug Claims to have made the music soley for the purpose of selling it at shows on tour as to eat better on the road. When AES and myself had the opportunity to open for Atmosphere last year in Boulder we bought a copy of Sad Clown Bad Dub from Slug and were warned the album was only available through his hands and would not be found in stores, or on line for a while, if ever.  The beats are not what most Atmosphere fans are used to hearing Slug rhyme over, but I can't imagine someone not enjoying these superbly produced tracks topped with tight, massively expressive, personal, insightful stanzas of supreme word wisdom and literary lovliness. The beats and lyrics on this record lack in  battle rhymes, aggressive beats, and guest emcees that earlier slug touched Rhymsayers projects produced.  The beats are really really good. This album is full of well said, simple, poetic pieces of perfectly timed knowledge, opinion, feeling, and fresh lines:

" You can't escape regret, but you might regret escape "...

" What I want I already gave up/ I give advice that I don't follow/ cause it's twice as hard to swallow/ when you know precisely what the pill is made of "...

" Bake the cake and sink your face into the frosting."

A variety of personal topics are touched. Slug can paint such a picture with simple words.  He is not an emcee who uses a metaphor with every sentence. Not an MC who uses a thesaurus to write "intelligent sounding," complicated concoctions that are confusing to anyone, even the bafoon who writes it and recites it with fast, spitty lips. Not someone who writes music that other people want to hear, rather it seems to me atleast that he writes whatever it is he feels needs to be written, and could care less about giving the fans what they expect or want, unless one happens to be a fan of the honesty.  I could go on and on about this album but instead let me summarize all of my ridiculous blabber by saying that this album is full of great songs. If you can get a copy of it, you will enjoy it's sounds. Slug proves himself once again to be a very versitile visionary thrusting hip-hop music further and further into freshness with his self expressions. Three thumbs up....notThesame.
