Interview with scott da ross, by ughh.ch, october 2006

Hi Scott. You just dropped your first solo album. Are you satisfied with it?

Hello! Yes, just released the album a month ago and I am extremely happy with it.
How long have you been into making music? How did you start?
I have been making music for about 5 years I guess. Although I played a bit of drums when I was a young one and bought a bass when I was 19 and played pretty steady for about 3 years, then I moved to Australia for one year but came home to buy turntables and get started on what I had wanted to do since I was 13.
What's your goal in making music ?
To make it with friends and be happy when I am making it. And it would be great to make somewhat of a living from it.
What's your favourite instrument ?
My sampler, a Yamaha EX5. But my favourite instrument other then what I have has to be the drums. I love hearing drums and watching drummers play. I need to.
You're running the label endemik-music. What's the story behind and what's connecting the artists on it ?
Yes, I run endemik music. We all found a mysterious thread sticking out of the ground. Grabbed the string and followed it all the way until we met in the center. So we were all, "cool yo, lets make some music and stuff".
What future projects are you working on ?
I am working with Filkoe176 to help complete his album. I am making a few beats, but I am also helping mix the album. It's really fun working on this record with him. It will be released on Endemik in the spring of 2007.

Also, working on Sontiago's album, mostly mixing and this will be out in 2007 on endemic as well. Working on a song with Audio88 from Germany. Working on a song with Eric Crusher from Germany. Working on a few songs with Recyclone and a Greek MC (sorry I do not know his name at the moment, just worked things out last week). Programming some drums for the new Soso album. And soon, I am going to start making a full album with Ghettosocks. I am pretty busy at the moment.

What kind of music do you listen to?
Lots. Almost any genre if it is something I feel.
Are you still interested in the hiphop movement? Why? Why not?
Of course. Always will be. People always say hip hop is dead or indie hip hop is over. Blah blah. Music has lasted forever in many shapes and because certain people think its over due to their own sour experiences with, doesn't mean it will end or people will not want to hear it. I love all sorts of hip hop and think each form has an important role. There is a lot of hip hop I would like to see vanish but I don't think it will. With the sorta 'different' hip hop that endemik is putting out, we just have to keep releasing what we love and find ways to reach the people who want to and need to hear it. Its tricky with hip hop becasause now when you say this word, people think club music, but really you are trying to reach the fans, who lets say like Radiohead or something like this (not that we are like radiohead in anyway but the average "rock" listener may not feel radiohead)
What's good rap for you?
Gravediggaz, Black Sheep, Bleubird, Filkoe176, Tweetch, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Kool Moe Dee, Wu-Tnag, Soso, Epic, Sonic Sum, El-P, Freestyle Fellowship, jdwalker, octavius, recyclone, Ice-T, Eazy-E, B.I.G, Epic, Sontiago, Cee!!!!!!!!, , etc… I could go on and on.
What good music?
Elbw, Beach Boys, Johnny Cash, Clem Snide, The National, James Brown, Sly, Amon Tobin, Califone, INSTRUMENTS, Beatles, and a million more!
Does climate have any influence on your music?
Possibly. I would think so. But the two places I have lived longest while making music have pretty extreme climates so they are somewhat similar. I think it must. I imagine if I lived in the hot sunshine all year long I might have to make some hit club joints.
Who's your favourite mc?
Too Poetic or Tweetch.
Who's your favourite god?
It's a tie between me and earth.
Do you read? What? Why not?
I do. Not so much lately because I have been pretty deep into my work, label and music. I find it hard to get a few relaxing minutes to enjoy reading. I have been watching a lot of film to relax (I love film so much). At the moment I am trying to read 'The Dancing Wu-Li Masters' and finishing up a book by Charles Bukowski called 'Post Office'.
What's your favourite book?
Not sure. Maybe 'White Boy Shuffle'.
What's your favourite word?
Werd !
Do you drink tea?
Yes, a bit, mostly when I feel sick or I feel worn down but I lov coffee and chose to drink it over tea (sorry united kingdom).
Have you ever killed an animal? Do you regret it?
No way, I like animals more then most humans. I stopped killing insects about 8 years ago (unless I have an ant infestation and that may lead to a war).
Thinking about your past, what do you regret?
I don't think I regret anything. If I did, I would be weighed down with nagative thoughts and that wont help me to continue my life.
Do you believe?
I believe in a lot of things.
What's the meaning of life?
Maybe to respect it. Other then that, I have no idea.
How is life in montreal?
Coffe is great. Music is great. Rap is not so great here. But I love it. Its either here, Berlin, or somewhere in Japan.
Would you rather have belonged to a different nation (or civilization)? If so, which?
Im happy with who I am. But it would have been awesome to be living as a Native American back before the westerners invaded. I imagine it to be so peaceful and beautiful.
Would you like to have perfect memory?
Yes. My memory is very scattered. Its good but I can retain detail only blurs and underlying meanings of things.
Would you like to be he most intelligent man on earth?
No.
Would you like to be famous?
I wouldn't mind it. Could be fun… I could get into film previews for free!
What was your favourite job as a child?
I actually didn't mind washing dishes at this restaurant called "Ponderosa". A lot of young people my age worked there and that made it fun but there was also so much drama… it was like a little soap opera. Great and horrible times. But the actual act of washing dishes was meditative.
Whom would you rather never have met?
I think I am good.
Which person or persons, now dead, would you like to see again?
This young girl named Amy. I could tell her family about it to see them light up with joy. They would need that more then I would need to see anyone else.
What do you need in order to be happy?
Im pretty good right now and I don't have much. Maybe a few extra dollars so I could do a few more things properly. Oh, I'd like to have an endless supply of gelato and coffee.
What are you grateful for?
Everything. My family especially, they are the best.
That seems really a phenomena of this hiphop-scene, especially the underground scene, that everyone connects and collaborates with everyone. And in a personal way, not just for business reasons.
Thank you for taking your time.
No, thank you!
