ELIGH "As They Pass"

(three thumbs up)

I purchased this album in Berkeley on a road trip with five friends for a cheap price on tape from the record shop Amoeba during the summer of 1998. I played this album in my car with the windows open over the bridge back to San Francisco sitting and seeing the city where the sounds of Eligh were conceived. I don't know anything about this cat other than what he exhibits through his music. He is an extremely talented producer and lyricist with the Living Legends and has in addition to "As They Pass", he has composed five other equally marvelous musical manifestations; "4 Tracks...LA and back, As They Pass, Story of Two worlds, Sidewayzdaze, Gasdream, and Gandolf's Beat Machine"As They Pass  was recorded in 97' and has tracks produced mainly by Eligh, but several from Elusive and Grouch featuring Murs, Aesop, Arata, Grouch, PSC, and Safari, who also does cuts. The first song is an introductory tribute to all the heads Eligh has worked with or has respect for. The beat is fantastic, and it serves as an excellent beginning to the album which continues consistently through eighteen tracks thick with both beautifully arranged musical compostions and fluid, honest, substantial poetics that flow with grace and clarity from soul to head to mouth to tape to ear,  to make faces smile and brains think. "If patience is a virtue/then time is not meant to hurt you..." There are many different subjects touched throughout the album. Topics ranging from way personal, or deeply metaphoric to  romantic and humorous. Also, on his re-mastered version of the album (which is I think the only one you can get any more anyway) he has a female emcee from Japan flow at the end of a song that sounds like a small child who can freestyle fairly good, and several remixes and bonus tracks which are fresh. The artwork on the album is all drawn by Eligh himself, as is the artwork on all of his albums. The combination of great music, diverse innovative vocal poetry flow, and tantalizing artwork on this album makes it overall, over all. You would be foolish to pass up the opportunity to dig this record. You would be blessed to own a copy. That's all.
